In January 2005 the Adult Literacy Program will be launching a family literacy program at a local family homeless shelter once a week. Building on the premise of the successful Fun With Words program offered at the singles homeless shelter, the family literacy program will invite families into shared literacy experiences that are both enjoyable and rewarding. Activities will include games, cooking, storytelling, and help with homework.
Tri-county Literacy Volunteers has just been selected by the trustees of The Alfred M. Senter Fund of Brunswick to receive a $6000 grant. This grant will enable the Adult Literacy Program to develop Reading for Better Business, a project to assist local businesses desiring to assist low-wage and/or low literate employees in improving workplace and personal literacy skills. Local businesses will be surveyed regarding the specific literacy needs identified by employers. Information about workplace literacy, resources and tutors will be provided through Reading for Better Business. Employees participating in the program will be followed for three years to substantiate the effectiveness of the project.
