Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta celebrated 30 years of service in 2003. The Coordinator, Gail Dyer, is presently working on the First Lady's Community Advisory Panel which is a pilot project in the Augusta area called "The Maine Reads Community Literacy Project". The vision is to have Maine be a state of life-long learners and readers and is a collaborative effort of libraries and literacy programs, civic organizations and area businesses. First steps include identifying current literacy programs, under-served segments and overlapped services and to raise awareness of area literacy activities. The Governor may name March as Maine Literacy Month as part of this initiative.
