Boosts Visibility and Funds for LV Maine Network: Barbara Bush Praises Volunteers
On September 20th 2007, LV Maine’s first major fundraising event took place at the Abromson Community Education Center in Portland. TURNING A NEW PAGE: CELEBRATING ADULT LITERACY IN MAINE drew over 200 people to benefit the LV affiliate network. Proceeds go toward capacity-building projects and accreditation with ProLiteracy America, which provides national training and certification in adult literacy.
Sponsored by the Mimi Foundation, Unum, and Nelson & Small, Inc., the successful evening featured Maine authors Monica Wood, Colin Woodard, and adult learners Tichot Pout N Yei and Cynthia Welch.
A superb reception was accompanied by jazz of The Clam Flat Five. LV Maine Board President Brian Deveaux introduced former Maine Governor Angus King as Master of Ceremonies, and the program opened with a stirring testimonial by Tichot Pout N Yei, whose transition from Africa to his new life in Portland has been aided by literacy tutor, Rosanne Graef. LV Maine Board Vice-President Chip Brewer lent his comedic talents to the auction, while Cynthia Welch demonstrated the courage it takes to build literacy skills as an adult. Monica Wood and Colin Woodard read from their respective works, and a movie clip shared images of Literacy Volunteers affiliates with compelling facts on Maine adult literacy.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush delivered an inspiring keynote address. A leading literacy advocate for over 25 years, Mrs. Bush praised the work of Literacy Volunteers and expressed her belief that “being able to read, write, and comprehend is one of the keys to a successful and happy life, and that a literate society is important to keeping our country strong and safe.”
In addition to all our wonderful sponsors, donors, guest speakers, our affiliates and tutors, to everyone who supported this event through their attendance or in ways seen and unseen, and to Sherri Parks who chaired the TNP committee, we thank WCSH-6 for recognizing the worthiness of this event and the work of Literacy Volunteers. LV Maine received excellent television coverage, including segments on the popular “207” program and a news report. To view those videos, click on the following links:
